Next: The
Series of 1902 (1c to $5)
Back: The
Baby Banknotes and Triangles (1c to 8c)
.
The stamps of 1890, without triangles, were printed by the same company that
printed Scott 182-218 and the Columbians, the American Banknote Company.
Philatelists therefore consider these stamps to be banknotes, the "Baby
Banknotes", and although very similar in appearance to the later issue
with triangle, they are actually quite different stamps, printed by a
private company on the soft porous paper of the American Banknotes. The
"Triangles" ushered in a new era of stamp production with the
Bureau of Engraving and Printing, a branch of the U.S. government finally
printing its own stamps. The issues of 1894-1898 printed by the BEP with
triangles are known to U.S. collectors as the "First Bureau Issue"
The initials "BEP" stand for "The Bureau of Engraving and
Printing""; "D/L" stands for "double-line
watermarked".
The quantity issued are estimates based on
available information.
