Comparison of Types III and IV of the 2¢ Triangle:  Line in Hair

The "Strengthened" Line in Washington's Hair

Type III Type IV

The line in the dead center of the image is slightly shorter than the line below it.

The line in the dead center of the image is longer than the line below it, has been strengthened and extended with a lighter line of shading,.

This is the main distinction separating the Type III and Type IV stamps. This line must be stronger and longer than the line below it to be a Type IV. The strengthened line may not always be as obvious as in this example; if so check the toga button for confirmation of Type.

All the Type III examples are from the same scanned stamp, plate number 146, and all the Type IV examples are from the same scanned stamp, plate number 762.
