Caution:
Scott 346 may be faked by trimming the top
and bottom perforations from Scott 334.
It is unlikely that the mint stamp will be faked since the mint 334,
the only 4¢ Washington with a double-line watermark, actually has a higher catalog value than the mint 346. This is not
the case for the used stamps, however, and care must be taken to
insure authenticity. Collecting in pairs is always best, although
margin copies or four large margins usually insure authenticity.
Watch out for used narrow margin copies of Scott 346, they may well
prove to be fakes. A watermark check can weed out any Scott 377s
(with single-line watermark) trimmed to look like the 346, or for
that matter any 4¢ Washington including the perf 10s and perf 11s. Remember the
4¢ imperforate stamp must
be double-line watermarked to be genuine.
